The Department was recognized as a Research Department under Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam. Facilities and expertise is available to carry out research in the field of Phycology, Mycology, Environmental Biology and Plant tissue culture. The faculties has publication in many national and international journals.

The Department was approved as a Botany Research Centre in 2007
