DBT STAR COLLEGE SCHEME OVERVIEW

The Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India, was established in February 1986, as a result of the visionary decision taken by the then Prime Minister, Shri. Rajiv Gandhi and as a sequel to the formation of the NBTB in 1982. Over the past 30 years, the Department of Biotechnology has administered research and implementation to tackle some of the most challenging bioscience questions and benefit the mankind. The DBT has funded research and implementation in multifarious areas like healthcare, agricultural and industrial, development of human resources in biosciences, creation of societal impact and creation of innovative and state-of-the-art facilities for R & D.

The Star College Scheme instituted by the DBT envisages holistic improvement of science education at under graduate level with special emphasis on improving the knowledge and skills of teachers and students through training programmes, provisions for hands-on-experience for students through laboratory infrastructure development and access to knowledge banks with strong support of books and journals including e-journal facilities. The Star College Scheme was awarded to St.Albert’s College in 2012 for a period of three years supporting five departments including Aquaculture, Botany, Chemistry, Physics and Zoology and after review by the DBT, extended for two more years up to 2017.

Implementation of the Scheme in the institution has had tremendous impact on the learning facilities with availability of state of art laboratory equipments for the students at the undergraduate level, increased number of books and journals in the library, subject knowledge improvement for faculty and students through Invited Lectures, Seminars and specialized training programmes and improvement in overall results leading to better higher learning opportunities for the students.
